If anybody cares, Cotton Mather was an exceptionally nasty piece of Puritan work -see Salem witch trials etc. I reckon the book was really intended for the American market, but they really should have realised they might need to make a couple of changes for the UK market. Sorry for the delay in replying — suddenly WordPress seems to be sending half my comments to spam. First, I feel a little bad about giving this book as a gift to my mother-in-law after seeing your review, FictionFan, but I think she liked it.
Poor you! I love the two ratings and the rant. I feel your pain…. I have a story that starts out here in Sausalito, but takes us to Dorset during the Second War, and eventually on to County Kerry during the first Obama campaign. Just there to draw attention to the Christie parallels, I think. So this story, is it yours? If so, when can we expect it? It is.
Seriously though, it sounds very interesting and I can believe it must have involved you in loads of research. I know both Dorset and County Kerry very slightly, but sadly Sausalito not at all.
Not as. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. Brilliant, but not for everybody I loved Wicked Autumn, but some may find the writing too literary and the British reader too stuffy. I might add that this is the most unusual method of murder I've encountered in all my years of reading mysteries. Categories: Crime Crime Fiction. Now history is threatening to raise its head again, and he has a murder case to contend with. It is impossible to believe anyone in his lovely village capable of the crime, and yet given the victim, he must acknowledge that almost everyone had probably fantasized about killing Wanda Batton-Smythe.
Good job you warned me off. This sort of thing has me gnashing my teeth and throwing things… preferably the book out of a sixth storey window. Ho ho this is a super review, FF! Very measured but I can detect the wrath between the lines. These Americanisms would have me frothing at the mouth.
It seems a shame, as otherwise this has a lot going for it. Hopefully this otherwise talented author stuck to settings the other side of the pond for her other works. Apparently she did a whole series of these! I wonder why not? I thought it was a very fair review! There were lots of positives and 4 stars for a non-Brit audience is nothing to be sniffed at! One can only assume the rest of the series contained these glaring irregularities of British culture. Yeah, I think I was nicer back then.

The quiet village seems the perfect home for Max, who has fled a harrowing past as an MI5 agent. But this new-found serenity is quickly shattered when the highly vocal and unpopular president of the Women's Institute turns up dead at the Harvest Fayre. The death looks like an accident, but Max's training as a former agent kicks in, and before long he suspects foul play. As the investigation unfolds, Max becomes more intricately involved.
Memories he'd rather not revisit are stirred, evoking the demons from the past which led him to Nether Monkslip. Malliet, like Louise Penny, brings a contemporary freshness to the traditional mystery. Malliet deftly juggles all of her characters The author provides a story that works on several levels, including the pleasure of a visit to a traditional English village. What made the experience of listening to Wicked Autumn the most enjoyable?
Moments of laugh-out-loud character dynamics catch you entirely off guard in the best possible way.
Who was your favorite character and why? The lead character is both human and endearing, without seeming impossibly perfect. This is one of those narrators who reminds me why I love audio books. Did you have an emotional reaction to this book?
Did it make you laugh or cry? It made me and my beloved laugh long and heartily. Any additional comments? One reviewer said it was twee. Well - yes. But in a GOOD way. It isn't gory, and it isn't dark. It reads like the best of the Midsommer Murder episodes and will appeal to those so inclined.
If you are accustomed to reading the Miss Silver novels, then this is on a par. Certainly no better, but definitely not worse. Maybe not as clever as Agatha Christie, but in my opinion, it gives Ngaio Marsh a run for her money.
So I definitely enjoyed it, in the way that I definitely do not enjoy the small village antics of Agatha French!?! I've forgotten the characters' name!! I intend to keep on discovering this cast of characters. An enjoyable, gentle read. Very enjoyable mystery with well developed characters and plot. Excellent story telling, very entertaining listen.
If you could sum up Wicked Autumn in three words, what would they be? Classic mystery, modernised. The detective, a former MI 5 man turned village priest, is an intriguing character. Bits of his own past are slowly revealed as the book goes on, which gives an interesting additional dimension to the story. Which scene did you most enjoy? A description of the dinner with his 'new age' friend.
It was a pleasant image of people who like each other despite their different persuasions.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? It was enjoyable to pick it up when I had time. I will look for other books by this author, to see if he develops this character further.

This story probably contains all my pet hates in a story. There is a paper thin plot, dire narration, English use of American English and the characters are a collection of shop dummies wearing sub Christie stock character outfits.
