In this course, you'll learn about developmental psychology. By the end of the module you will learn about: - Historical approaches to defining abnormality; - The biological, psychological and social treatments for psychiatric disorders; - The methods to assess and diagnosis abnormality and psychiatric disorders; - The research strategies used to gain knowledge of abnormality and psychiatric disorders. The common methodological approach is to compare children of different ages with adult great apes, often chimpanzees, to investigate at which age an apparently human skill emerges in human ontogeny, and if this skill is also found in the ape species. Stories and vignettes of real individuals, a Berk signature feature, open each chapter and continue throughout the text to illustrate developmental principles and teach through engaging narrative. Module Length. Within this framework, however, students may elect to concentrate on basic or applied problems, in laboratory or naturalistic settings.
Graduate students may select from a wide range of course offerings. These include several core courses that lay the basic theoretical foundations of the discipline, as well as a strong statistics sequence. Students with a particular interest in statistics have the option of earning a minor in this area. Minors in other areas, such as Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, or Social Psychology, are also available. In addition, the Developmental program offers a number of advanced graduate seminars tailored to meet current faculty and student interests.
There is also a weekly research seminar attended by all division members.
