Each chapter - or course - starts with a couple pages of explanation or story from Ching-He. The accompanying pictures are glorious and make everything look so yummy. You will be glad you did! Jun 22, George rated it really liked it. By now, if you follow me, you know that I like to "read" cookbooks. I fell in love with Ching-He on the Cooking Channel and finally decided to lay my hands on this book. And it is really wonderful.
I have tried three of the recipes so far and enjoyed each one of them. I do have a couple of problems with the book though, which is why it is only getting four stars. Ching-He tells stories that By now, if you follow me, you know that I like to "read" cookbooks. Ching-He tells stories that are interspersed between the sections of the book, which are lovely, personal and a great touch.
But for some reason, the print was so light that I had difficulty reading them unless I had my reading lamp at the highest setting the rest of the book I could read in regular light. Also, the recipe quanities are a bit odd. As an American cook, I'm used to the old English measures why we didn't make the transition to metric in the '70's with the rest of the world still baffles me.
Personally, I find this really annoying and feel that they should have spent the time making the switches since I'm spending the cash. And finally, Ching-He is famous for saying that to cook good Chinese can be accomplished in a Western kitchen by having five specific ingredients. Yet as I was reading some of the recipes, I kept finding ingredients where it was apparent that I would be visiting an Asian grocery.
Since I live in NYC, no biggie, but I have to wonder where except the internet most cooks in more rural parts of the country will be finding ingredients. Overall though, the recipes are easy with little to complicate them and they taste delicious. This book is one of my absolute favorites. The recipes are full of flavor and super healthy. No need to buy Chinese take out if you have this book in your arsenal. Majority of the ingredients are easy to find locally. Ching really gives you the authentic flavor with recipes that you can cook in just thirty minutes; great for weeknights! Haven't tried any of the recipes yet. You need a wok to cook most of them. I wish there were more pictures of the completed recipes. As I'm trying to eat more vegetables her recipes seem like a good fit for me. I'll still be cooking the classics from Ken Hom, but this book could be a good weekday stir-fry guide for me. If you are wanting to try out doing some chinese recipes then this is a great book for you to look at : The ingredients that are in the recipes aren't hard to find most of them can be found at the local shop which means that there is no excuse for not trying out the recipe, they are full of flavour that excites your tastebuds. There's a real mix of food in this book, and don't let the title fool you into thinking that they're actually easy. You also won't find a lot of your old favourites - no sweet and sour for example. Despite that, this is a great book with easy to follow reliable recipes which produce delicious food.

I love this book and the show. It's really easy to follow because she is really modernized the classic recipes. I love Chinese foods and never get bored to eat it!
