EDT RM You will experience genuine engineering project challenges, working collaboratively with students from across the discipline to apply your specialist skills. There are plenty of opportunities to discuss material in more detail with members of staff.
Our academics are happy to meet with students individually during their advertised office hours or receive questions by email. You will discuss the very latest ideas, research discoveries and new technologies in seminars and in the field and you will become actively involved in a research project yourself. All our academic staff are active in internationally-recognised scientific research across a wide range of topics. You will also be taught by leading industry practitioners. Student projects are often linked to our research activities and may involve working with industrial partners.
Recent projects have involved the design and construction of an autonomous hovering platform, modelling of airflow around a car and 3D CAD representation of the Met Office headquarters in Exeter, which has close research links with the College. You must pass your first year assessment in order to progress to the second year, but the results do not count towards your degree classification.
Mechanical engineering is a challenging and exciting subject that affects nearly all aspects of our lives. Our main objective is to provide you with the knowledge and flexibility to enable you to play a leading role in the creation of the technology of the 21st century.

Exeter has an excellent reputation with graduate recruiters and a strong employment record. Our graduates excel in specialist engineering fields and across a broad range of other sectors. We offer a very wide range of opportunities for you to develop the skills employers are looking for, including industrial placements and study abroad.
Find out more on our careers pages. Our undergraduate engineering programmes are enriched by a network of industry links which have been established through collaborative research and consultation.
At the instant shown determine a the velocity of the crank pin at B, b the velocity of the piston, c the velocity of the point D which is at the centre of the connecting rod and d the angular velocity of the connecting rod. Application of the cosine rule will however be required for examples such as that shown in Figure 2. Structural Engineer's Pocket Book : Euro Resources Access to suitable laboratory equipment and test instrumentation is required. Information for All Students Information for All Students We welcome applications from all able and motivated students, regardless of your formal qualifications.
Project work is a core element of each programme, providing invaluable experience of problem-solving, engineering design and working in multidisciplinary teams. Projects are typically industrially driven, are commercially relevant and often directly involve a company. A team of undergraduate students has developed new machinery which can produce 3D chocolate in any shape. The project set out to push the boundaries of additive layer manufacturing ALM technology as chocolate is a particularly difficult material to work with.
We had to make sure that our end result still tasted as good as the original ingredient. The team secured a variety of sponsors from international heavy weights such as Cadbury to Tiverton based HepcoMotion, manufacturers of linear motion products, and Farnell, a specialist electronic component supplier.
It is hoped that once the prototype has had further development, the technology will be affordable enough to be sited in shops and available for individuals to use over the internet, making it possible to produce totally personalised chocolate items. Throughout your degree you will have the opportunity to meet with graduate employers.
Professional engineers visit the College to hold mock interviews and to discuss your career opportunities at an early enough stage to inform your choice of modules and placement decisions.
My year in industry at Caterpillar was probably one of the best things I did. I even got to go to Sweden for 6 weeks on double pay! Technicians are much sought after and a career in this field is lucrative and rewarding. It is intended to subsequently empower candidate Engineering Technologist to demonstrate that they are capable of applying their acquired knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and values in the work environments in South Africa. The purpose of this qualification is to develop a student into a researcher, able to conduct independent research with minimum guidance in a chosen field of Mechanical Engineering.
The outcomes of the research will contribute to knowledge production in the specialisation field. It also promotes a lifelong learning approach and an aptitude for training other students in similar fields. At least two years full time research, concluded with a Doctoral Thesis. The purpose of the qualification is to develop a researcher who will make a significant and original contribution to knowledge in a specialised area of mechanical engineering and technology.
To develop a researcher in mechanical engineering with advanced abilities, to independently apply mechanical engineering design, synthesis, and related principles, to specific problems of society at large. One of the main objectives in this process is to develop an advanced capability to conduct engineering research of an original nature.
Proof of successful completion of a Vaal University of Technology approved course in Research Methodology. The department follows the assessment strategy of formal written exams. Weights for calculating the year mark as well as the final mark will be reflected in the Learning Guide. All tests, assignments and practical work done during a particular semester, will help learners learn and understand the work. This takes place at a Vaal University of Technology accredited employer company.
