The British Marxist historian E. Thompson's last finished work was a study on William Blake, Witness Against the Beast: William Blake and the Moral Law , and it shows how far Blake was inspired by dissident religious ideas rooted in the thinking of the most radical opponents of the monarchy during the English Civil War. Reverent of the Bible but hostile to the Church of England indeed, to almost all forms of organised religion , Blake was influenced by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American Revolutions.

Blake was a nonconformist who associated with some of the leading radical thinkers of his day, such as Thomas Paine and Mary Wollstonecraft. In defiance of 18th-century neoclassical conventions, he privileged imagination over reason in the creation of both his poetry and images, asserting that ideal forms should be constructed not from observations of nature but from inner visions. Considered mad by contemporaries for his idiosyncratic views, Blake is held in high regard by later critics for his expressiveness and creativity, and for the philosophical and mystical undercurrents within his work.
