Here are some of the key things you will want to visit in Trujillo:. Plaza Mayor — As with most Spanish towns, the Plaza Mayor or main square of Trujillo is a place to gather, especially on summer evenings when floodlights add to the atmosphere. The Palacio of Trujillo — Around the main square are the grand houses built in the 16th centuries by notable families of the town, such as the Palacio de la Conquista , which was commissioned by Hernando Pizarro, brother of the great explorer, with an intricately carved stone facade and ornate balcony.

From the main square, walk up the hill into the Historic Centre , which is enclosed by metres of high walls, with winding streets, hidden courtyards and four of the original town gates remaining. If you are a Game of Thrones fan, you may have spotted the castle as the setting of the fictional Casterly Rock, the ancestral home of the Lannisters, in Season 7 of the hit series.

As you wander around the old town, look out for Iglesia de Santa Maria la Mayor, which is the oldest and most important religious building in the town.

Trujillo Night Walking Tour Discover the legends the history and curiosities of Birding tour in Extremadura Day 1: Madrid airport-Extremadura birding tour All of my Spain travel has been in November, so of course I found them all to be nearly free of tourists; and I suspect you will find a similar scene in October.

For total charm, my favorite was Zafra -- a beautiful little white city -- but it's small, and I suppose few tourists would spend more than a night. I spent three nights, but then I enjoy just hanging out in attractive places like this. If you happen to enjoy chess, note that this was the boyhood home of Ruy Lopez, one of the first of the game's great theorists. But though his boyhood home is still there, it seems to be a private building now; there's no museum in it.

Or at least there wasn't three years ago, when I was there.

Merida is the largest of the four, and has the greatest number of official "tourist attractions" -- but not necessarily tourists. Its museums, fort, and ancient Roman sites will easily keep one occupied for two or three days, and its historic center is also very charming. But if you can just pick one, I think I would go with Caceres.

The old town is attractive, with narrow streets, white walls and iron window grills as you will find in the other three towns as well , and the very old town, just above the old town, is fascinating at least I thought so. Trujillo is similar, but smaller; it likewise has an old section with a very beautiful main plaza , and a very old section. You could easily do a day trip to Trujillo from Caceres by bus. If you're interested in the Grand Conquistadors, note that this was the home town of Francisco Pizarro and his brothers.

The Pizarro family home can still be visited, though as an illegitimate child, Francisco himself spent much of his boyhood on the family form, presumably tending the pigs.
